In the last few years, I’ve been seeing steel cut oats recommended by both trainers and nutritionists. I’ve finally decided to give them a try and I’m so glad I did! If there’s one thing I don’t like, it’s mushy, pasty oatmeal. Gross. When I first began cooking the steel cut oats, I really thought that’s what I was going to get. They looked like grits and I was not impressed. But…then after they were done cooking, I added a little brown sugar and some cinnamon and gave my pallet a taste. I was so surprised!
They weren’t pasty at all. In fact they were more chewy than regular rolled oats. I can compare it to noodles cooked al dente. Soft with just a bit of chewyness.
Now…I have to say that these oats are the Quaker Quick 3-minute Steel Cut Oats and not the traditional type that take 30 minutes to cook. This girl ain’t got time fo dat. I cooked them on the stove top and while the instructions said to cook them for 5 minutes, I cooked them for just over 3 minutes. I’m guessing if you cooked them the full five minutes, they’d be more soft and potentially mushy so I’m having none of that.
I’m curious what the traditional type tastes like now. I may have to pick some up next time I see them and give them a try – on a weekend of course. Have you ever had traditional steel cut oats or the 3-minute version? What did you think? Leave me a comment below – I’m curious!
